At USA Today:Thanks to a president with a proud and public Christian foundation, the evangelical movement will have a foothold in Washington well after Bush returns to Crawford, Texas. Indeed, the Bush White House teaches young believers how to be true to their faith within the confines of the nation’s capital.Every administration imprints its spirit onto a set of young zealots. FDR created the New Deal babies, JFK brought us the Peace Corps kids. For Bush it will be the Evangelical Elites — the first generation of conservative Christians this century to become enthusiastically involved in politics. |

Christian imprisonment in N. Korea worse than thought |

North Korea (MNN) -- In North Korea, the treatment of Christians is worse than previously thought. Spies have been sent into the country to to find out how believers are treated, and Open Doors USA president, Carl Moeller, says the number is mind boggling. "The number of political prisoners and people that includes Christians in prison camps may number between 500,000 and 1 million people out of the 25 million or so in North Korea. It's almost inconceivable." Camps this large appear as small cities on satellite surveillance. Despite great oppression against Christians, however, the church is growing, says Moeller. "We estimate the number of underground Christians to be at least 200,000, and it's likely there are as many as 400,000 to half a million. Christians there were deemed illegal by the government almost 60 years ago, yet the church continues to grow. That's one of the great paradoxes of persecution." Open Doors has started a three-year prayer campaign for North Korea. To participate, sign up at our Web site. |

Russia (MNN) -- Russian president Vladimir Putin who can't run for re-election has suggested he may run in parliamentary elections, setting himself up to become Prime Minister. Speaking from Moscow, Russian Ministries's Sergey Rakhuba says Putin's reforms have restricted freedoms, which has taken its toll on western workers. "We see many western groups who are not getting visas or not getting visas renewed. Many foreign missionaries have had to move back to the states or other countries. And we also know that it was not publicized, but it was an order." Rakhuba says that means their Schools Without Walls program is essential for equipping the church. "This is the method to train next generation or young, potential evangelical leaders who will become not just church leaders but politicians who will eventually some day embrace freedom and continue preaching the Gospel." |
